The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Smog Post Diwali

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the world's most polluted city found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "severe" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the capital recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the recommended threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x higher than safe limits.

Firecracker Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that blankets the metropolis as the cold season approaches.

However earlier this year, the newly elected local government petitioned the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously questioned by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, judges agreed to the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Many monitoring devices throughout the capital recorded pollution peaking around the night hours to the most severe readings observed during the festival in at least the past three years.

International Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing worsening pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants originating in across the border following the events.

Chronic Pollution Issue

The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in the city have continued as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen.

During the festival period, the levels of dangerous particles in the air has been documented to shoot up to 70% higher the most severe records ever recorded in Beijing, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Multiple Pollution Factors

This crisis in Delhi is caused by a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, generating dangerous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the capital region is substantial, according to multiple research.

This pollution results in high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be causing approximately 10k premature deaths annually in Delhi.
