Our team is analyzing images and video shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow. Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing. The initial step to check the site from which the images were from relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia. We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video. Locating other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured. Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
