Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
