"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: I also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile fans have openly coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy contenders.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos frequently feature them marching in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to form a group."

"And thus all is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The trio have called into a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The album came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness called for a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

However the sister act will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
